7 Best Mission Statements
Take that Leap and Follow Your Passion
When we start a business, we tend to know why we started it. Whether that business was a hobby that has now become an income-generating business or a lifelong passion to start. Regardless of the why, my advice is to just start. Take that leap and follow your passion. There will definitely be many ups and downs filled with tears of joy and frustration. Hopefully, it will be filled with your passion to help others while fulfilling your dream of being your own boss.
Raise Your Flag and Make a Statement
Sometimes it is difficult for us to relay that information to our prospective clients in a direct and informative way. The best mission statements describe, in a few short words, a flag is raised and a claim being staked on this particular property. It should include the business’ purpose, why it exists, and how it is making a difference in the lives of the clients it serves.
Your business’s mission statement is important not only for your business but also for your clients. A good business mission statement sets a clear understanding of your business's core values, goals, and objectives.
Be Clear and Direct
You will want to make one that is easy to understand and remember. If you are just starting out, put it on a sticky note and repeat it daily. As your business grows, frame it and put it on a wall for all to see. You want all of your employees to read it and relay it easily. You want it on emails and literature that you hand out. You want it to be everywhere so that your clients can read it and easily understand what your business is about.
7 Top Fortune 500 Company Mission Statements
I have researched 7 Fortune 500 companies and placed their mission statements below for you to read and hopefully be inspired to write your own business mission statement.
Walmart
“We aim to build a better world - helping people live better and renew the planet while building thriving, resilient communities."
Amazon
“To be Earth’s most customer-centric company”
Apple
“To bring the best user experience to its customers through its innovative hardware, software, and service.”
CVS Health
“Bringing our heart to every moment of your health.”
UnitedHealth Group
“To help people live healthier lives.”
ExxonMobil
“Being the world’s premier petroleum and chemical manufacturing company.”
Berkshire Hathaway
“We will achieve our vision by utilizing our world-class team of professionals and systems to guide people in making great real estate and financial decisions.”
As you can see from these examples, a great mission statement can be short and sweet or it can be a little longer. But the one thing they all have in common is the precise clarity of the business's core values, and goals, and that their clients are the center of their business.
Final Thought
As my husband would tell my children every day when they would walk out the door for school each morning….”Make someone smile today.” If you bring the joy of making someone's day a little brighter to your business’s mission statement and philosophy, your business has a greater chance of success.
